Painter

Trained in visual arts in France in the 1970s, Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec's commitment as an artist was confirmed in 1975 when he was selected as an exhibitor at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture (Jeune Création) at the Musée d' Modern art from the City of Paris.

His interest in artistic creation continued alongside his prolific academic career as a professor and researcher at the Faculty of Planning at the University of Montreal.

These years will be punctuated by notable forays into the world of art, notably as designer of certain installations including: in 1991, Les pruches ou la forêt enchantée in Montreal (Canada) in collaboration with the landscape architect Claude Cormier; in 1993, The gardens of the clouds in Niort (France) or in 2012, Scarified Landscape, three ephemeral landscape installations produced for the 2nd international edition of Landworks (Sardinia/Italy). Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec is also the co-founder of the International Festival of Contemporary Gardens of Métis (Quebec).

For the last decade, in his studio facing the St. Lawrence River, he has devoted himself more to painting and developed a pictorial universe in dialogue with his scientific concerns and interests on territories and landscapes. Abandoning gestures in favor of a narrative construction, he freely deploys a sensitive reflection, high in saturated colors, superimposed flat areas and peaceful or eventful lines. Rich in multiple meanings and open to interpretations, his paintings evoke imaginary stories. His works are sensual landscapes, horizons, skies, sea…
